Guide-led care strengthens recovery beyond the mountain

Injured porters and guides are returning to work sooner thanks to follow-up care in their home districts.

An injury on the mountain does not end when a patient reaches hospital. For porters and guides, the months afterwards decide whether they can support their families again.

Our recovery programme now follows patients home. Trained community health workers visit every two weeks, check wound healing and mobility, and connect families with physiotherapy and financial support.

Since the programme began, patients have returned to work an average of six weeks sooner, and far fewer have had to be readmitted to hospital.

“They did not forget me after the helicopter left. That is what made the difference.”
