Bringing altitude-safety lessons into mountain schools

Students in Solukhumbu are learning to recognise altitude sickness and teach their families what to do.
In Solukhumbu, many families work in trekking and climbing. Their children are often the first to notice when a parent or visitor is unwell, so we started teaching them what to look for.
Our school programme uses games, stories, and simple checklists to explain altitude sickness. Students then run sessions for their own families.

Twelve schools took part this year. Teachers tell us students now correct visiting trekkers who try to climb too fast.
