Makalu guides trade lessons from the season's hardest days

An open exchange between guide teams produced a shared checklist now used on every Makalu expedition.
At the end of a hard season on Makalu, guide teams who usually compete for clients sat down together to talk honestly about what went wrong.
The result is a shared safety checklist covering rope fixing, weather turn-around times, and radio check-ins. Every team working on Makalu has agreed to use it.
“On the mountain we are all one team. It took a bad season for us to say that out loud.”
